The deployment of sensors in a city as part of the Internet of Things (IoT) offers decision makers the ability to track a range of challenges, from parking space availability thereby reducing emissions from traffic flows, to measuring highway surface conditions ahead of resurfacing. With higher precision dynamic surveys, time and road closures can be avoided with data input directly to 3D CAD.

High resolution multi-lane road surface mapping using 3D laser profilers

Highway ministries require annual inspection of roads and infrastructure for planned maintenance. Road surface defects need to be measured and serve as input data to pavement management software. Defects are likely to be measured using 3D laser sensors which acquire the shape of the road surface. Once the condition is determined that the road has degraded and needs renovation and resurfacing, then a high-precision survey of its surface is used as an input to 3D CAD road design software to control 3D pavers and milling machines using laser-tracking total stations. We propose to reuse the 3D road surface condition data to create the road surface model to avoid manual road surface surveys requiring road closures.
John Laurent is a co-founder of Pavemetrics Systems inc. where he is VP Sales and CTO. For the past 25 years he has worked with both Pavemetrics and the National Optics Institute of Canada (INO) on developing 3D and laser imaging technologies that are now being used by 250+ government institutions and data collection companies around the world for the inspection of roads, rails, tunnels and airports. He is also the author of several papers and patents on the subject of using lasers, optics and image processing for the inspection of transportation infrastructures.

IoT beyond the hype: CityVerve is creating a smart blueprint for future cities

Cities face complex challenges, for both the people who run them and those who live in them. The Internet of Things (IoT) provides new opportunities to collect real-time data through sensors or software and to connect multiple datasets, giving decision-makers and citizens insight to make more intelligent, efficient and sustainable decisions. Ordnance Survey (OS) is part of CityVerve, the IoT demonstrator project in Manchester, which aims to use emerging IoT technologies to meet many of the challenges facing a modern city. A ‘smarter’ city relies on good information to address complex and interlinked problems like pollution and air quality.
Steve Murray has worked for Ordnance Survey for 19 years. During this time, he has undertaken many of the roles which are integral to the organisation, from data collection, project, production and region management, as well as a relationship management with public sector customers, through to his current post as the Smart Delivery Manager, with his main focus on the CityVerve Project in Manchester.

David Owens is Senior Consultant for Digital Transformation in Costain. He has 15 years’ experience of building & designing highways schemes from the M25 Widening to infrastructure associated to residential & retail parks. He is currently seconded to Highways England BIM Programme following successfully delivering the design of the A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement Scheme a BIM Early Adopter. Previously David has coordinated the approach to BIM for major infrastructure schemes of the UKs biggest Contractors. David is a passionate believer in Technology and Innovation driving productivity in the construction sector.
